The fourth edition of the Global Sustainable Seafood Galicia Forum (GSSG), which will take place in Vigo on 28 April, has officially announced its agenda. The Director General of Fisheries, Technological Innovation and Aquaculture of the Xunta de Galicia, Isaac Rosón; the Director of the Nueva Pescanova Foundation and Co‑Director of the GSSG Forum, Marta Costas; and the Co‑Director of the GSSG Forum, Ángel Matamoro, presented the theme of the upcoming event, ‘Responsibility and Impact’, along with its ambitious programme, which will bring together an international panel of 18 experts. Attendance is expected to reach 300 people.

At the presentation, the Director General of Fisheries, Technological Innovation and Aquaculture of the Xunta de Galicia, Isaac Rosón, described Galicia as “an undisputed international benchmark in the responsible management of marine resources; forums such as the GSSG are the best platform for showcasing our model”. He also noted that the theme of this fourth edition, centred on the analysis of responsibility and impact, aligns directly with the Galician Government’s roadmap: “to ensure that our fishing, shellfish harvesting, aquaculture and processing activities continue to be a vital economic and social driver, whilst always safeguarding the conservation and balance of our marine ecosystems”.

For her part, Marta Costas, Director of the Nueva Pescanova Foundation and Co‑Director of the forum, emphasised the importance of the theme under discussion: “how responsible practices within the seafood sector, across the entire value chain, have a positive impact on the planet and on people, building on the previous edition, where we discussed measuring sustainability.”

The Forum’s Co‑Director, Ángel Matamoro, outlined the five discussion panels featured in this fourth edition – certification schemes, blue carbon, socio‑economic development, waste reduction and Marine Protected Areas – along with an opening address on the FAO’s Blue Transformation programme and a closing session focused on the impact economy. “We are bringing together leading figures and organisations in Vigo, thereby contributing to the sector’s progress in terms of sustainability.

Speakers

Emma Heslop, from the IOC-UNESCO Global Ocean Observing System program, highlighted crucial findings from this biennial report.

The Sea Councilor, Alfonso Villares; the Mayor of Vigo, Abel Caballero; the Director General of Fisheries Management and Aquaculture, Aurora de Blas, and the President of the Nueva Pescanova Foundation, José María Benavent, inaugurated the third edition of the Global Sustainable Seafood Galicia Forum (GSSG), held at the Afundación headquarters in Vigo.

Under the theme Measuring Sustainability, the third GSSG Forum welcomed 350 attendees (both in person and online) from 30 countries, surpassing the previous edition’s numbers and solidifying its place as a key event in sustainability discussions within the fishing and aquaculture sector.

During the inauguration, and in front of numerous representatives from institutions, organizations, and companies in the sector, the Sea Councilor, Alfonso Villares, emphasized the importance of sustainability in the industry. He announced that the Galician government would advocate in Brussels for a review of the Common Fisheries Policy, “so that it maintains a balance between environmental, economic, and social factors, resulting in a fisheries management that realistically addresses the sector’s current challenges.”

The Mayor of Vigo, Abel Caballero, stated: “We must transform our research and global activities into a means to shape the future of this planet,” and stressed the importance of “listening to scientists.”

For his part, the President of the Nueva Pescanova Foundation, José María Benavent, highlighted the importance of measurement, “which allows us to quantify progress and also understand the road ahead.” The Director General of Fisheries Management and Aquaculture, Aurora de Blas, emphasized that the Spanish fleet is “a global benchmark for sustainability and good practices.”

A multidisciplinary panel of 21 national and international experts took part in Vigo, representing institutions, associations, research entities, and leading companies within the fishing and aquaculture sector.

The experts contributed different viewpoints and perspectives on the industry’s status, priorities, and challenges in sustainability measurement. Additionally, they discussed best practices, key priorities, obstacles, and requirements for achieving standardization and simplification in measurement processes.

Active sector collaboration

The forum kicked off its sessions with the presentation of the 2024 State of the Ocean Report, delivered by Emma Heslop, a specialist from the IOC-UNESCO Global Ocean Observing System program. She highlighted crucial findings from this biennial report, developed by 98 authors from 26 countries, including Spain.

The report underscores the ocean’s critical role as a food source for an expanding global population while identifying key management areas, including increasing nitrogen and phosphorus levels in seawater, plastic pollution, ocean warming, and acidification. Additionally, it highlights risks such as tsunamis and rising sea levels.

Heslop stressed that ocean observation serves as a vital tool for risk management and future demand assessment, helping sustain industries responsibly. While there are over 8,000 observation platforms operating across 84 countries and generating 120,000 analyses daily, 75% of the ocean remains unmonitored, with a significant knowledge disparity between the northern and southern hemispheres.

Heslop commended the ongoing collaboration between IOC and fishing vessel networks in Australia and other countries for ocean data collection. She encouraged forum participants to actively engage and invited the industry to join the FVON (Fishing Vessel Observing Network) program, which facilitates data gathering through fishing fleets.

The forum proceeded with five panel discussions dedicated to sustainability measurement, featuring complementary viewpoints from NGOs, the value chain, scientific research, government institutions, and financial entities.

The European sector perspective was outlined by Antonio Basanta, policy assistant to the European Commissioner for Fisheries and Oceans. He introduced key aspects of the Oceans Pact and emphasized the urgency of revitalizing Europe’s competitiveness in fisheries management. After the sessions, GSSG Forum Co-Director Ángel Matamoro synthesized the event’s conclusions, which will be published soon.

The forum concluded with final remarks delivered by Patricia García, Director General of Fisheries, Aquaculture, and Technological Innovation at the Xunta de Galicia, alongside José María Benavent, President of the Nueva Pescanova Foundation.[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column]

Marta Costas, Director of the Nueva Pescanova Foundation and Co-Director of the GSSG Forum, Patricia García, Director General of Fisheries, Technological Innovation, and Aquaculture of the Xunta de Galicia, and Ángel Matamoro, Co-Director of the GSSG Forum.

The third edition of the Global Sustainable Seafood Galicia Forum (GSSG), set to take place on May 28, has presented its agenda in Vigo. The Director General of Fisheries, Technological Innovation, and Aquaculture of the Xunta de Galicia, Patricia García; the Director of the Nueva Pescanova Foundation and Co-Director of the GSSG Forum, Marta Costas; and the Co-Director of the GSSG Forum, Ángel Matamoro, announced the theme of the upcoming event, “Measuring Sustainability,” along with a panel of 21 national and international experts who will discuss the topic. An attendance of 300 people—both in person and online—is expected.

During the presentation, the Director of Fisheries, Technological Innovation, and Aquaculture, Patricia García, stated that “this forum is of great interest, both for its format and the quality of its speakers, as well as for the opportunity it provides to delve into a concept that is so fundamental, yet sometimes difficult to define or put into practice—sustainability.” A concept, she explained, that must serve as a goal for the entire maritime fishing sector, as its achievement will determine the future of the entire sea-industry chain.

The Director of the Nueva Pescanova Foundation, Marta Costas, emphasized the importance of focusing on sustainability measurement in this third edition. As she explained, “Identifying key indicators that enhance business efficiency and generate a positive impact on society is the way to move toward a common goal, while also consolidating the work we have been doing at the Nueva Pescanova Foundation.”

The Forum’s Co-Director, Ángel Matamoro, outlined the five perspectives that will shape discussions on measurement: NGOs, value chains, institutions, science, and finance—each bringing unique insights that will be explored through five dedicated sessions. “The diversity of views, experiences, priorities, challenges, and best practices will allow us, by the end of the meeting, to establish recommendations, identify needs, and draw conclusions that contribute to improvements in sustainability,” he noted.

The invited experts represent leading institutions, associations, research entities, and companies within the fishing and aquaculture sectors. They will offer diverse perspectives on the current situation, priorities, and challenges in the industry’s pursuit of sustainability.

Among the speakers at the third GSSG Forum will be UNESCO’s ocean observation expert Emma Heslop, FAO’s sustainable trade and value chain consultant Bhakti Anand, and policy assistant to the European Commissioner for Fisheries and Oceans, Antonio Basanta. Rosa Chapela, Director of CETMAR, will moderate one of the roundtable discussions.

The challenge of measuring sustainability

Today, seafood sustainability is a shared goal among all stakeholders in the value chain, and the means to achieve it lie in responsible action.

The sector and its stakeholders face the challenge of measuring sustainability. On one hand, compliance with current regulations is essential; on the other, identifying effective measurement indicators serves a dual purpose: enhancing business value and efficiency while ensuring a positive impact on society and the environment. The shared goal is continuous progress.

The Global Sustainable Seafood Galicia Forum (GSSG) will host its third edition in Vigo on May 28, under the theme Measuring Sustainability. This gathering will bring together professionals and experts from the seafood sector for an open dialogue, sharing diverse visions and perspectives on the current state of the industry, its priorities, and the challenges of measuring sustainability in fishing and aquaculture.

Seafood sustainability is a shared goal among all stakeholders in the value chain, achievable through responsible action. It requires preserving natural resources to benefit both present and future generations while ensuring social and economic advantages.

The sector and its stakeholders face the challenge of measuring sustainability. On one side, compliance with current regulations is essential; on the other, identifying measurement indicators serves a dual purpose: enhancing company value and efficiency while ensuring a positive impact on society and the environment. The shared goal is continuous progress.

Different approaches

On the topic of measuring sustainability, the third GSSG forum will examine five key perspectives—NGOs, value chains, institutions, science and finance—each offering its own approach. These perspectives will be explored across five dedicated sessions, featuring twenty-one national and international experts. Through diverse insights, experiences, priorities, challenges, and best practices, the forum aims to establish actionable recommendations, identify pressing needs, and outline conclusions that contribute to sustainability improvements.

The second edition of the GSSG forum, held in November 2024, focused on the theme An Asymmetric Vision of Sustainability. The event brought together fourteen international speakers in Vigo and produced key insights aligned with the goal of sustainability. Among these takeaways was the recognition that the sector’s future depends on maintaining healthy oceans, that addressing environmental challenges requires science, research, and knowledge-sharing, and that collaboration and unity are essential for long-term success.

Dialogue, collaboration, transparency, and ambition are essential to advancing seafood sustainability, with measurement providing the insight needed to drive progress.

The third edition of the GSSG Forum will gather 21 international experts in marine sustainability in Vigo on May 28th.

The third edition of the Galicia Forum on Global Seafood Sustainability (GSSG) will take place in Vigo on May 28, bringing together twenty-one experts from across the globe to further the progress and shape the future of the seafood sector. Prominent figures from a range of organizations will share their insights on this year’s theme, Measuring Sustainability, offering diverse perspectives. With this event, the GSSG further establishes itself as a key international hub for advancing seafood sustainability.

The day promises a wealth of compelling content, opening with the presentation of UNESCO´s State of the Ocean Report 2024 by its representative, Emma Heslop, and concluding with Antonio Basanta’s overview of the European Commission’s Commissioner for Fisheries and Oceans.

For the third year running, Galicia –a leading region in fishing, aquaculture and fishery product processing– strengthens its role as a global reference in sustainability discussions, bringing the conversation to the heart of where the industry thrives.

The Forum is an initiative of the Nueva Pescanova Foundation, with the support of the Consellería do Mar of Xunta de Galicia, Nueva Pescanova and Abanca.

Previous editions

The second edition of the GSSG forum, held in November 2024, centered on the theme An asymmetric vision of sustainability. The event brought together fourteen international speakers in Vigo and attracted over 300 participants from twenty-five countries, both in-person and online.

Seafood sustainability has become a shared goal for all stakehol¬ders in the value chain. Achieving it requires responsi¬ble actions that safeguard natural resources for the benefit of current and future generations while ensuring social and economic gains.

However, not all stakeholders in the va¬lue chain start from the same starting point. This disparity was explored during the second GSSG Forum, which produced key takeaways aligned with its theme of asymmetry. Among these were the recognition that the sector’s future depends on maintaining healthy oceans, that addressing environmental challenges demands science, research, and the sharing of knowledge, and that collaboration and unity are indispensable for long-term success.

In contrast, the inaugural edition of the GSSG Forum, held in April 2023, convened 21 seafood industry experts to discuss three critical topics: seafood sustainability and traceability, the sector’s contributions to the UN 2030 Agenda, and sustainable finance.

A major conclusion of the first forum was the crucial importance of dialogue, transparency, and collaboration across the sector in a fair, inclusive, and resilient way. The event emphasized the vital role of research and underscored the ambition required to align with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) outlined in the 2030 Agenda.

For the second year, the GSSG Forum brought together international experts in Vigo to discuss seafood sustainability. Approaching the topic from an asymmetric perspective, the forum analyzed the different positions of stakeholders in the value chain to identify measures to better address the common challenges around sustainability. The forum ended with a presentation of conclusions, emphasizing the importance of collaboration, dialogue, and joint work as essential elements for securing the future of the ocean, as well as highlighting the need for scientific collaboration to respond to environmental demands and ensure a clean, resilient, and productive ocean for future generations.

The second edition of the Global Sustainable Seafood Galicia Forum took place on November 11th and 12th at Sede Afundación Vigo. Fourteen international experts took part in its six sessions, highlighting key themes.

Nada Bougouss, Fishery Officer at the Value Chain Development Team, FAO´s Fisheries and Aquaculture Division, opened the first session with the presentation of the SOFIA 2024 Report, a biannual document that highlights, in its most recent edition, the potential of sustainable aquaculture to respond to the growing demand for seafood, guaranteeing food security and employment in the sector, for which FAO forecasts a 35% growth by 2030. According to the report, global aquaculture production surpassed capture fisheries for the first time in 2022. In addition, 78.9% of the catches of the top ten fishery species come from biologically sustainable stocks.

Bougouss stressed the blue transformation proposed by FAO as a guide for a healthy ocean, based on sustainable aquaculture, effective management of the fisheries sector, and improvement of value chains, so that the social, economic, and environmental viability of marine aquatic systems are guaranteed.

North-South asymmetry was the theme of the second session, which featured Namibian Deputy Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources, Silvia Makgone, as a speaker for the Southern view, and Árni M. Mathiesen, Senior Advisor to the Icelandic Ocean Cluster, to offer the Northern view. Namibia is renowned for its successful fisheries and aquaculture management. Makgone advocated regional cooperation and international agreements to combat illegal fishing, stressing the importance of research and employment/social development to ensure growth.

Namibian Deputy Minister of Fisheries Silvia Makgone (left) and Brim General Counsel Friðrik Friðriksson, at different points during the Forum.

For Árni M. Mathiesen, former Minister of Finance and Fisheries in Iceland and former Director of Fisheries at the FAO, Iceland’s main ambition is to optimize the value of catches through establishing a highly technical and regulated industry. Both speakers participated in a roundtable moderated by Øyvind Ihle, CEO of the Global Sustainable Seafood Initiative (GSSI), during which they agreed on the importance of collaboration, and on the role of research and science for taking on environmental challenges.

Regulation or voluntary compliance was the focus of the third session, which included the participation of the General Director of Fisheries, Aquaculture and Technological Innovation of the Consellería do Mar, Antonio Basanta, who presented the regulatory vision from the position of one of the most important fishing regions in Europe, Galicia. Basanta emphasized the need for the necessary adaptation among sector-administration, advocating for regulations that reflect operational reality and encourage shared responsibility in the management of resources.

Emily Howgate, Ocean Spotlight – Engagement Lead WBA, spoke about voluntary compliance, illustrating how companies can commit to sustainable activity voluntarily and transparently, beyond regulation.

The following panel discussion, moderated by Susan Steele, Executive Director of the European Fisheries Control Agency (EFCA), stressed the need to balance the freedom/creativity of voluntary engagement with the responsibility of the regulatory framework, which must provide structure and clarity for all.

Dimension, economy, and science on the second day

The fourth session addressed the asymmetry between large and small players. Dave Robb, Group Sustainability Lead for Cargill’s Aqua Nutrition businesses and member of Seafood Business for Ocean Stewardship (SeaBOS), illustrated how this organization relies heavily on research, advocating for international certifications and regulations to maximize efficiency and safety in its global operations.

The president of the National Federation of Fishermen’s Guilds (Spain), José Basilio Otero, offered the perspective of small players, advocating for an eco-social approach to the future, focused on ecology, people, and the community. Otero highlighted social inclusion and local governance as key elements for long-term sustainability. The round table was moderated by Nuno Cosme, Chief Sustainability and CSR Officer of the Nueva Pescanova Group, who supported the idea of collaboration, dialogue, and dissemination to achieve a more sustainable sector, regardless of the size of the players.

The fifth session focused on sustainable/blue finance, where the president of the Spanish Observatory of Sustainable Finance, Julián Romero, explained how this can provide economic stability and environmental benefits, which are fundamental to a future with a balanced and resilient economy.

Fridrik Fridriksson, General Counsel of the Icelandic company BRIM, presented the successful issuance of BRIM’s blue bonds for improvements in energy efficiency and the decarbonization of process-wide operations. Both speakers highlighted the value of internal knowledge in companies to identify eligible projects, as well as their verification and subsequent monitoring to address sustainable financing processes The following round table was moderated by Javier Fraga, Director of Abanca Mar, who stressed the need for financial actors and industry to collaborate, so that sustainable financing contributes to relevant sector objectives.

The researcher and director of the Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO), Mª Carmen García, closed the Forum, emphasizing that science is an important pillar for achieving marine sustainability, as well as the social, economic, and ecological aspects. García underlined that global collaboration is essential to face the challenge of climate change, to reduce accidental catches, and to enhance resilience to environmental impacts. Together, the forum stressed that the blue transformation requires collaboration between different sectors, public investment, and clear goals at a global level.

On November 12, the second edition of the Global Sustainable Seafood Galicia Forum concluded at Sede Afundación Vigo, following two days of expert discussions on marine sustainability. Once the conclusions were shared, José María Benavent, President of the Nueva Pescanova Foundation, and Antonio Basanta, General Director of Fisheries, Aquaculture, and Technological Innovation at the Consellería do Mar, formally concluded the event.

The second GSSG Forum was held on the 11th and 12th of November under the theme An asymmetric vision of sustainability. For two days, Galicia became the epicentre of global dialogue, bringing the sustainable debate closer to the realities of fishing, aquaculture and seafood processing activities.

During the closing ceremony, the president of the Nueva Pescanova Foundation, José María Benavent, highlighted how “the contrast of perspectives allows us to move forward, and this forum has particularly focused on the idea of contrast”, in reference to the idea of asymmetry.

After briefly reviewing the different approaches to sustainability discussed at the meeting, José María Benavent urged large and small companies to “work together to defend a socially and economically relevant sector that has never stopped pursuing environmental sustainability.” He also emphasized the crucial role of blue financing in driving the shared goal of sustainability within the sector. Reflecting on the forum, he concluded: “From Vigo, we have achieved the objective of making Galicia attract and lead the global dialogue on seafood sustainability.”

Ángel Matamoro, director of the GSSG Forum; Ana Ortiz, delegate of the Xunta de Galicia in Vigo; and Marta Costas, director of the Nueva Pescanova Foundation.

A few days before its inauguration, the II Galician Forum on Global Seafood Sustainability (GSSG) presented its program in Vigo. The event was attended by the regional delegate of the Xunta de Galicia in Vigo, Ana Ortiz; the director of the Fundación Nueva Pescanova, Marta Costas; and the director of the GSSG Forum, Ángel Matamoro.

The GSSG Forum will take place on November 11 and 12 at the Afundación headquarters in Vigo. A total of fourteen international experts will discuss the asymmetry of sustainability. Among them, the Deputy Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources of Namibia, Silvia Makgone; the representative of FAO, Nada Bougouss; the director of the Spanish Institute of Oceanography, Mª Carmen García; and the Director General of Fisheries, Aquaculture and Technological Innovation of the Department of the Sea, Antonio Basanta. The executive director of the European Fisheries Control Agency (EFCA), Susan Steele, will moderate one of the debates.

During the presentation of the forum, the territorial delegate Ana Ortiz highlighted the position of Galicia, “which with more than 4,000 fishing vessels and nearly 5,000 aquaculture farms, today leads the European fishing regions, providing employment throughout its value chain to more than 50,000 people”. Ana Ortiz added that “Galicia brings together all the elements -industry, university and technological and research centers- to also lead the dialogue on sustainability”.

The director of the New Pescanova Foundation, Marta Costas, pointed to the purpose of this entity to promote and develop activities that, in relation to fishing, aquaculture and the processing and marketing of seafood products, contribute to sustainable development in all its aspects and to research, innovation and dissemination, also in all its aspects: technical, scientific, nutritional, social or cultural. “Sustainability requires collaboration, transparent dialogue and ambition, conditions that concur in the GSSG Forum, which again brings to Galicia voices and prescribers of relevance,” he said.

The asymmetric vision

The Forum’s director, Ángel Matamoro, explained the theme “An asymmetric vision of sustainability”, which will enable the comparison of diverse realities and visions within the sector: with respect to geography (North-South), the scale of stakeholders (large and small), the regulatory framework, and access to sustainable financing, “four critical dimensions that aim to achieve the common goal of preserving natural resources for current and future generations while generating economic and social value.”

Experts at the forum will offer diverse insights and perspectives on the current situation, priorities, and challenges facing the fishing and aquaculture sector in its search for sustainability. This event marks a significant milestone, earning a place on the international calendar of global debate.

The GSSG Forum is promoted by the Nueva Pescanova Foundation, the Consellería do Mar of Xunta de Galicia, and has the support of the Nueva Pescanova Group and Abanca.

The second edition of the Global Sustainable Seafood Galicia Forum (GSSG) has as its theme An asymmetric vision of sustainability. The meeting, which will take place in Vigo on the 11th and 12th November, will bring together professionals and experts linked to the seafood sector to offer, in an open dialogue, different visions and perspectives on the current situation, priorities, and challenges facing the fishing and aquaculture sector to ensure sustainability.

Today, seafood sustainability is a shared goal among all stakeholders in the value chain, and the means to achieve it lie in responsible action. It involves preserving natural resources for the benefit of present and future generations, ensuring social and economic benefits.

Four perspectives

In the path to sustainable action, not all stakeholders in the value chain start from the same position. Considering this asymmetrical view of sustainability, the second GSSG forum covers four perspectives: geographic location, regulation, size/dimension, and finance. These perspectives will be discussed by a total of fourteen international experts in different sessions: North-South asymmetry, Regulatory and voluntary compliance, The asymmetry between large and small actors and Blue financing as a catalyst for a more sustainable seafood sector or vice versa?

The forum will enable discussions around good practices, priorities, challenges, and different needs for a responsible action, encouraging each stakeholder to reflect and identify their current position.

The importance of dialogue, transparency, and sector-wide collaboration, in an equitable, inclusive and resilient manner, is a prominent conclusion of the first GSSG Forum (April 2023), which highlighted the relevance of research. The path towards sustainability also requires ambition to contribute to the fulfilment of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) set out in the UN 2030 Agenda.
